Oct 28/2005 : eBay fraudsters
sentenced to jail The report by the BBC (Full Story) fails to mention the efforts of a stalwart group of citizens who patrol the listings on eBay, bidding on auctions that they know or suspect to be fraudulent to drive the prices up so that victims are dissuaded from bidding. Scamdex is in contact with one such organization of individuals who give up their free time working inside eBay to get scammers removed from the system. 'Mike', a member of the organisation, tells me that he spent 12 weeks working with the authorities to hep close down this particular scammer ring. eBay at best tolerates such vigilantism, and at worst, treats them as abusers and often fails to take their warnings seriously enough (or quickly enough) to be effective in preventing even more victims.
