PROGRAM ASSOCIATE

The American Bar Association seeks a Program and Finance Associate to provide financial, and administrative support the Director of the ABA Africa Law Initiative.  This includes assistance with project development (specifically developing detailed budgets for grant proposals) and implementation; processing of expense reports, grant budget analysis, tracking and preparation, and maintaining contact with overseas personnel regarding financial matters; planning and staffing of meetings, drafting correspondence, and maintaining files.

Ideal candidate should have an undergraduate degree and minimum two years related work experience including experience working with international grant-funded projects.  Some knowledge of Africa history, geography, politics and languages is helpful.  Requires strong written, interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to juggle multiple tasks. Experience in budget monitoring and/or bookkeeping is desirable, as is the ability to read, write and speak French.

Salary in the mid $30's with excellent benefits.

Microfinance Consultant - Grameen Foundation USA +b

Grameen Foundation USA seeks a consultant to provide services to LAPO (Lift Above Poverty Organization), a microfinance institution in Nigeria.  LAPO is poised for significant growth, but needs technical assistance in developing institutional and staff capacity in its credit department. The consultant will help the credit department develop a system for tracking key financial and operational performance indicators and a rigorous internal financial control system. The consultant will also be tasked to train the staff in operating these systems and assisting with the selection and implementation of a computerized management information system. 

The contract is for a 4-6 month term payable in monthly installments, with a performance bonus at the end of the contract, plus round-trip airfare to Nigeria.  The ideal candidate will have the following experience:  previous accounting work with micro credit organizations with at least 5,000 borrowers, 4-5 years or equivalent working in the financial field, certifications in international accounting standards, knowledge of financial computer systems, excellent interpersonnel skills, and project management.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI), headquartered in Palisades, NY, seeks an outstanding individual to manage on-going or planned projects involving the use of climate information and seasonal forecasts to reduce food and livelihood security risks in the Greater Horn and southern Africa: two regions that are prone to climate-related disasters.  The work includes coordinating IRI research staff inputs and developing/maintaining collaborative relationships among relevant stakeholders to achieve project objectives.  Stakeholders range from local communities to national government agencies, regional institutions, collaborating researchers, development assistance agencies and interdisciplinary teamwork management in both academic and non-academic arenas.  Additional responsibilities include training and capacity-building activities, designing and organizing meetings and workshops, and oral and written reporting of project results; excellent written and verbal English skills essential. Depending on the applicant's experience, the position may offer opportunities to work in other geographic areas as well.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

Candidates will have either a Ph.D. or an M.Sc in a relevant field such as geography, international relations, environment, economics, agriculture, water resources, rural sociology, anthropology, or gender studies.  Candidates with a Ph.D. must have at least two years of relevant experience in international development, preferably in Africa, while M.Sc candidates must have four years; and may also conduct strategic research in his/her areas of expertise, must be able to perform in international settings and skill in other relevant languages desirable. The successful candidate will travel and represent the IRI in the project regions, so must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the IRI and a strong commitment to the end-to-end process of using climate information to solve real-world problems.
