Job description:

The Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Program seeks a full time program coordinator to develop, implement, and manage a community-based program in one or more developing countries, starting in Africa, to increase household food security and improve health in impoverished rural communities. Focal areas include sustainable agriculture and natural resource management; human nutrition and health; marketing and small business development; local credit systems and microfinance; human resource development and community capacity strengthening. The program coordinator, based at Iowa State University, will liaise with country program directors and partners, and the management team and faculty at ISU, oversee planning and implementation of training activities, monitor the budget, provide periodic reports, and assist in program promotion and fund-raising activities.  Extensive travel to developing countries is expected. The duties of this position will require the ability to work and make decisions relatively independently. Salary commensurate with education and experience at ISU Professional & Scientific grade 15 level.

Qualifications and skills required: Qualifications:

Masters degree in a program area and knowledge of others; minimum of 3 years experience in planning, implementing and monitoring participatory rural development projects in a developing country (preferably in Africa); good knowledge of theory and practice relating to sustainable rural livelihoods; strong leadership, management, financial, and teamwork skills; experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders (farmers, donors, partners, faculty, government authorities); and excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.

The Natural Resources Practice Area of DAI’s Environment & Natural Resources Sector is seeking to hire a full-time Development Specialist for its team based at DAI Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.  The Natural Resource Management Specialist will be required to conduct technical assignments and assist with business acquisition in the forestry and wildlife sectors as well as watershed management including soil and water conservation, natural resources policy, and institutional strengthening.  Duties of the Natural Resource Management Specialist will be to (1) expand the natural resources portfolio through targeted marketing and written proposals, (2) support ongoing projects through technical oversight and research, (3) provide on-site technical inputs to ongoing efforts overseas.  The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical and administrative support to one or more projects in an existing portfolio that includes three natural resource management projects in sub-Saharan Africa, two in Asia and the Middle East and two in South-east Asia.

Qualifications and skills required:

Masters Degree in an appropriate discipline;

Min 12 years experience, including 3 years working in a developing country on natural resource-related activities.  Experience working in Latin America, South-East Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa preferred. 

Technical expertise including forestry, coastal resources, fisheries, wildlife management and related rural development activities.  Candidates having addition experience in cross-cutting themes such as forging linkages with the private sector, decentralized governance and natural resource-based enterprise development (including tourism);

Project management experience, hands-on experience using Geographical Information Systems preferred;

Ibis Reproductive Health is a non-governmental, non-profit organization headquartered in Cambridge, MA (USA) that conducts clinical and social sciences research, advocates for medical reform, and analyzes policy – all as ways to improve women’s reproductive autonomy and health.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We seek an Associate to join our team in South Africa. S/he will report to the director of Ibis’s South Africa office, and will also work closely with Ibis headquarters staff in Cambridge, MA (USA). The Associate will work closely with the Co-Principal Investigator in Johannesburg to implement program activities of a large trial measuring the effectiveness of the diaphragm for prevention of HIV infection. S/he will be responsible for the social science research components of the trial, for managing local ethical approval and reporting with staff at the study sites, and for representing the trial to the South African HIV prevention community.

Dates and term of assignment: Starts 1 January 2004 or sooner. Contract for two years, renewable depending on funding.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Design and prepare social science research protocols, data collection instruments, IRB and regulatory submissions and manuscripts related to the diaphragm HIV prevention trial.

2. Work with Ibis staff and clinical site staff to complete social science research projects as needed/appropriate.

3. Participate in other trial activities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Doctoral degree in a social science or public health discipline, or advanced degree with equivalent experience.

FIVE COLLEGE WOMEN'S STUDIES RESEARCH CENTER

A collaborative project of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst

The Center invites applications for its Research Associateships for 2004-2005 from scholars and teachers at all levels of the educational system, as well as from artists, community organizers and political activists, both local and international. Associates are provided with offices in our spacious facility, computer access, library privileges, and the collegiality of a diverse community of feminists. Research Associate applications are accepted for either a semester or the academic year. The Center supports projects in all disciplines so long as they focus centrally on women or gender.

Research Associateships are non-stipendiary. However, international applicants with expertise in Latin America, Asia or Europe may apply for one of the two special one-semester Ford Associateships for Fall 2004 or Spring 2005, which offer a stipend of $12,000, plus a $3,000 housing/travel allowance in return for teaching (in English) one undergraduate course at Mount Holyoke College. The Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts will co-sponsor the associates and invites applicants to consider contributing to our year-long focus on The World and Water: (Re)Source of Power in the 21st Century with a special emphasis on design (architectural, furniture, graphic, or product design as well as urban and landscape design), documentary studies in film and photography or performance in an international context.

Preference given to applicants with performance or production experience and whose work crosses traditional academic boundaries. Applications welcomed from visual artists, film and video makers, architects and designers, dancers and actors, as well as academic scholars. Ford applicants need not be studying their own region of origin.
