PM - Project Management Training Course +b

Posted by: "Registration" <Registration@mdf.nl>

MDF Training & Consultancy offers a training course in Project Management from 10 – 21 January 2005. Development projects often are rather complex undertakings. Many projects are designed as technical interventions without an adequate institutional set-up and without due regard to the political environment. Another complicating factor is the communication within the project team. Moreover, it occurs that people are appointed to managerial and advisory positions because of their proven technical skills rather than on the basis of their managerial experience and ability.

As a result, project managers, chief technical advisers and team leaders are frequently confronted with a range of operational management problems. A good command of technical skills (e.g. planning techniques) and personal skills (e.g. negotiating or conflict management) will help to adequately deal with both technical and personal management problems.

Participants

Project managers, chief technical advisers, programme coordinators and other project and programme staff envisaged to become managers in the near future and who have a particular interest in improving their overall management skills. Participants preferably should have at least three years working experience in development related activities.

Course objective

This two-week course aims to broaden and improve technical and managerial knowledge, skills and attitudes. It also strives to deepen understanding of the factors affecting project success and failure including policy issues that may influence project/programme progress and impact.

Course contents

Technical management skills

You will be introduced to the Objective Oriented Project Planning (OOPP) method and the Integrated Organisation Model (IOM). Together with the Logical Framework (LF) these concepts will offer you sufficient tools for the in-depth analysis of your projects objectives, strategies, annual plans and organisational set-up. In combination the Logical Framework and the IOM also form a solid basis for project implementation in terms of monitoring, steering, taking corrective measures and preparing evaluations.

Personal management skills

Throughout the course the interpersonal skills and activities of a manager are discussed. Various roles are practised in role-plays and exercises on subjects like conflict management, teamwork, negotiating and leadership.

The participatory approach used in this course enables you to check ideas and discuss problems in a forum of colleagues and trainers, and to compare your own approaches with those of others.

Course Outline for the Project Management Course

Week 1

Monday: Roles of the manager, Participatory Planning (OOPP)

Tuesday: Project planning: stakeholder, problem and objective analysis

Wednesday: Intervention logic, external factors in the Logical Framework

Thursday: Communication, meetings and presentation skills

Friday: Teamwork, Review week 1

The importance of sound financial management is becoming more prominent and non-financial managers, desk officers and advisers increasingly need to have a basic understanding about financial management tools and techniques.

If you are a manager or adviser you may often wonder about questions such as: How do I assess the financial position of my organization? How efficiently do we utilize our resources? How do I choose among financial alternatives? As a desk officer assessing project proposals you need to be able to assess project budgets and the financial status of the implementing organizations. This course will equip you with the basic techniques for financial management.

Different indicators for assessing the financial performance of the organization will be developed. Special attention will be given to depreciation, cost-price calculations and the use of cost-centres.
