Consultant Project
Facilitator for Water Projects at Karkhen River Basin Tehran, Iran +b
Posted by: Michel Valat <icarda-jobs@cgiar.org>
International
Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) Aleppo, Syria
Organization:
ICARDA is a non-profit international agricultural research center in a worldwide consortium of 15 centers, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). With a staff of over 400 scientists and support personnel, representing more than 40 nationalities, ICARDA addresses two key areas of agricultural research: germplasm improvement (cereals and legumes) and natural resource management. The Center has a global mandate for barley, lentil and faba bean improvement, and a regional mandate for the improvement of wheat, chickpea and forage and pasture legumes. A major emphasis is placed on the conservation and management of land and water, improved on-farm water-use efficiency, and improved productivity of small ruminants in integrated farming systems in dry areas. The Center’s research and training programs are implemented in partnership with national programs and, in most cases, with other CGIAR centers as well as advanced research institutes in both developing and industrialized countries.
The Research Projects:
The Consultant Project Facilitator will support two new projects, being led by ICARDA within the ‘Water-for-Food’ Challenge Program of the CGIAR. Both projects will focus their research on the Karkheh river basin in South-West Iran: The project “Strengthening Livelihood Resilience In Upper Catchments of Dry Areas by Integrated Natural Resources Management” will focus on improving rural livelihoods at the upper catchments of the Karkheh river basin. It is basically a watershed management project, but will use livelihood analysis as an entry point. Consequently, the project is very inter-disciplinary and a lot of different stakeholders will be involved, which will require a lot of participatory consultation. The project is expected to come up with feasible livelihood-supporting technical options for the communities at the benchmark sites and a transferable watershed management approach for dry areas. The project “Improving On-farm Agricultural Water Productivity in the Karkheh River Basin” is aimed at improving rural livelihoods by improving water productivity at the farm, field and basin levels. The project will address both rainfed and irrigated systems and will integrate technical, socioeconomic as well as institutional aspects. The project is community-based and will be implemented with full participation of farmers and be strongly linked to the project described above. This project will seek to out-scale the results to the Euphrates and Amu Daria river basins in West and Central Asia, respectively.
The Position:
ICARDA is seeking a Consultant Project Facilitator for these two projects of the CGIAR Water-for-Food Challenge Program at the Karkheh River Basin. The Facilitator will be based at ICARDA’s Iran Project Office in Tehran, Iran, and will report to the two project leaders, based in the Natural Resource Management Program of ICARDA. The Facilitator will carry out the following responsibilities:
• Represent the project leaders on site and report to them.
• Follow up on meetings, workshops and
training activities with the basin coordinators
• Follow up on implementation and report progress and achievements
• Develop and/or collate, synthesize and
finalize reports, and minutes
• Ensure implementation of capacity
building, information and knowledge
management plans
• Update the basin coordinators about
progress
• Advise research teams on technical
matters of his/her field of specialty
• Serve as observer on the project technical committee (PTC).
Qualifications and Experience:
The position requires a PhD in water/soils related areas, 10 years experience, good scientific background, familiarity with the conditions in Iran, good communication, facilitation, editing and coaching skills, experience in participatory tools, proficiency in spoken and written English, and fluency in Farsi.
Remuneration:
Consultancy fee will be based on experience. The appointment will initially be for a period of one year, renewable for a maximum of four years. The salary will be paid in US dollars.
Application:
Qualified applicants are invited to send: 1) a cover letter of interest, including recent salary history; 2) curriculum vitae, with a recent photograph; 3) names, addresses, fax and e-mail addresses of three professional referees, and; 3) photocopies (non-returnable) of other relevant supporting documents; to: Personnel Office; ICARDA, P.O. The Network of East-West Women (NEWW) and the Bulgarian Gender research Foundation (BGRF) are pleased to announce a call for applications for the Women's Human Rights Training Institute.
To goal of the Institute is to strengthen the ability of lawyers from Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States (CEE/NIS) to litigate women's human rights cases at the national, regional and international levels through the development of feminist legal analysis and litigation skills, cross-border cooperation, and networking.
The project is a two-year, four-part series of
workshops bringing together the same group of fifteen participants over the
course of the training. Through both technical workshop sessions on the
European Court of Human
Rights, European Court of Justice, and United Nations
enforcement mechanisms, as well as substantive training sessions on violence

justice for women in various legal arenas.
The methodology is participatory and active, combining capacity building with technical assistance to prepare cases that participants will be expected to develop throughout the course of the Institute.
Successful applicants are required to commit to participate in the entire two-year, four-workshop Institute series. NEWW encourages applications ONLY from CEE/NIS lawyers who are willing to make this two-year commitment. Through the Legal Fellowship Program and other programs, NEWW supports independent women's movements that foster women's participation in all aspects of public decision-making.
