The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is a dynamic international membership organization that connects, informs and mobilizes people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, just and sustainable development and women’s human rights. AWID’s goal is to cause policy, institutional and individual change that will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.
One of AWID's most important activities is its International Forum. Hosted every two to three years since 1982, this event has become the largest recurring conference on gender and development and women’s human rights. The Ninth International Forum on “Re-inventing Globalization” was held over four days in Guadalajara, Mexico in October 2002. AWID hosted more than 1,400 women and men from over 105 countries. Activities at the Forum ranged from thought-provoking debates to practical skills-building sessions, from a market place offering the latest resources to mentorship programs for young women. Our next International Forum - our tenth - will be held in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2005.
We are currently seeking to hire a Forum Manager who will be responsible for the coordination of this major event. This is a fixed-term position running from July 2004 through January 2006 based at AWID's Secretariat in Toronto, Canada.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As Forum Manager your major responsibilities would include:
* With Executive Director and International Planning Committee, contribute to the development and planning process for the program elements and content of the Forum, also managing the overlap of program and logistics;

The Program Assistants will provide support to the Africa Education Initiative (AEI) Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Program (AEI-AGSP) in Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone Southern Africa. The positions will be based in Arlington, Virginia and are contingent upon funding.
SOUTHERN REGION includes: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia.
CENTRAL AND EAST AFRICA REGION includes: Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea,
Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.
SUMMARY OF POSITIONS:
The Program Assistants will assist with the implementation and backstopping of activities under the AEI-AGSP in approximately 8 countries in the Southern Africa region/Central and East Africa region. The AEI-AGSP supports scholarships and mentoring programs for socially, physically, and economically disadvantaged girls in Africa. They will be responsible for liaison with a variety of NGO partner organizations to ensure timely, high quality, and transparent implementation of project activities as well as coordination with program contacts at various embassies and USAID/Washington. International travel required (20%).
These positions REQUIRE theoretical knowledge of education and development and practical expertise in postcolonial Southern African/ Central and East African countries. The ideal candidates will have excellent written and oral language abilities in English and French and/or Portuguese and experience in applying theoretical knowledge and independent critical thinking.

The role of the Development and Economic Policy Division is to facilitate sustainable development and increasing self-reliance in Forum island countries through policy analysis, advice and coordination, and the provision of specialised economic assistance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Gender Issues Adviser will be responsible for:
* advocating awareness of gender as a critical component of sustainable development and to providing training on gender issues to senior government officials in Forum Island governments, in collaboration with other relevant regional and international organisations;
* undertaking analysis (in collaboration with governments, regional organisations and development agencies) of key social/gender policy issues and activities in the region to promote strategic and integrated approaches to meso and macro policy development in line with the main mandates of Forum Secretariat;
* providing advice and technical assistance in support of the implementation of the gender strategy endorsed by the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP), including the continued development of harmonised institutional approaches to integrating gender policies and programmes within CROP member organisations;
* strengthening, and providing support for, networks of government and non-government organisations (NGOs) in Forum Island Countries in order to enhance capacities to conduct crosssectoral policy analysis and to advocate increased gender equality;
* advising on the development of project-specific gender strategies and plans to ensure that gender is integrated into program/project activities with adequate awareness of the resources required for successful implementation;
* producing and promote a Pacific focused materials to increase understanding and awareness of the gender issues, and update existing materials as required;
* the effective representation of the Forum Secretariat at meetings;
