Job description: ApproTEC is a non-profit organization that develops and promotes low cost tools that are bought by thousands of poor people and used to increase their income by up to a factor of ten, and lift themselves out of poverty forever. At this time ApproTEC is recruiting a Country Director to manage their ongoing and expanding program in Tanzania. The Country Director’s principal responsibility is to sell micro-irrigation technologies to rural farmers. This will be achieved by: managing an efficient private sector distribution chain for locally manufactured ApproTEC micro-irrigation pumps; creating demand (and therefore sales) by implementing an intensive marketing and promotion program; and measuring impacts using a state-of-the-art performance and impact monitoring protocol.

The Country Director for ApproTEC Tanzania will be responsible for managing ApproTEC’s operations in Tanzania, and reporting to ApproTEC’s African headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, ApproTEC headquarters in San Francisco and, when required, to USAID and other donors. All activities support the primary goal of increasing sales of micro-irrigation pumps and other technologies. Responsibilities include:

 Motivating and managing the existing ApproTEC Tanzania team and recruiting, orienting and training additional staff – a total staff of 15-20 people

 Reporting to ApproTEC’s Africa Director on a regular basis, and liaising closely with ApproTEC’s specialist staff in Marketing & Sales, Impact Monitoring, Administration/HRM based in Nairobi, and with ApproTEC’s management team in America

 Manage Private Sector Supply Chain Network for pumps & other equipment. Develop and negotiate business models/logistics in consultation with private sector manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers re costs, margins, sales projections, importation/procurement of technologies, storage and transport, financing arrangements etc.

 Manage marketing/awareness creation program to accelerate/build demand and strengthen Supply Chain

 Manage Sales and Impact Monitoring Program to Gather marketing intelligence/inform Marketing & Promotion campaigns and measure and report on social and economic impacts of program

 Reporting on all aspects of the operation. This includes financial and administrative management and reporting

 Coordinating with ApproTEC’s Nairobi and San Francisco offices on both strategic (program design and implementation) and tactical issues (e.g. importation logistics)

 Building and maintaining good relationships with the Tanzanian government, other development agencies, the media, donors and ApproTEC’s program partners – manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and other service providers.

 Ensuring that all activities/programs undertaken are consistent with the basic policies and strategic approaches used by ApproTEC

Qualifications and skills required: The ideal candidate will have the following qualities:

At least 2 years experience living and working in Sub-Saharan Africa - preferably in East Africa

Marketing Experience – retail marketing of consumer goods, and supply chain management
