In the wake of the recent conflict in Iraq, UN Security Council adopted resolution 1483, lifting the long-standing sanctions regime and providing an international legal and political framework for the reconstruction process of Iraq. Resolution 1483 encouraged efforts by the people of Iraq to form a representative Government based on the rule of law that affords equal rights and justice to all Iraqi citizens without regard to gender and recalled Security Council Resolution 1325, which calls for a gender approach in post-conflict reconstruction.

UN system identified gender as a cross-cutting theme and it is crucial to promote an enabling environment for women's equal participation in the current political and socio-economic reform processes both as equal participants with a strong voice as well as beneficiaries. In response to a request by the SRSG a.i. in June 2004 for stronger UNIFEM support in addressing gender issues, UNIFEM will place an international Gender Advisor in its regional office in Amman.

The Gender Advisor (A-4) will be dedicated to supporting the UNAMI  inter-agency processes to ensure gender mainstreaming, particularly in the priority areas of governance and poverty alleviation. In addition, she will coordinate and work closely with the UNIFEM team for Iraq to develop and guide UNIFEM programme for addressing gender issues in post-conflict reconstruction process.

The Gender Advisor will work under the direction of UNIFEM Regional Director in Amman and report to her on a regular basis. In addition, she may also receive overall guidance from UNIFEM HQ, particularly on policy and management issues. In carrying out her day to day work, she will liaise closely with the UN Country Team for Iraq, to ensure a common and coordinated approach towards gender mainstreaming.

QUALIFICATIONS:

-  Post-graduate degree in social sciences and/or gender, and knowledge of Arab culture.

-  Professional experience working with United Nations agencies, bilateral aid agencies and international organizations in management positions.

-  Demonstrated leadership, negotiation and team building capacity to be able to guide UN system and other partners efforts towards gender mainstreaming.

4) Trade Debt and Globalisation Adviser / UNDP / Johannesburg, South

As part of the Bureau of Development Policy (BDP), the substantive policy arm of UNDP, the adviser will respond to demands for advice from countries in southern Africa, channeled through the Resident Representatives, head of the Regional Center in the region, or Senior Adviser on Inclusive Globalization BDP and will also contribute to developing global consultative services in his/her area of expertise.

The adviser will be part of a multi-disciplinary consulting team, based at the Regional Centre in Johannesburg and will have technical competence in particular fields with a holistic approach to development. This will involve keeping abreast of research and policy developments on trade, debt and globalization issues; gathering and communicating lessons from experience; partnering with other advisers, consultants and institutions in the region; developing a strong advocacy role for corporate global policy frameworks. In carrying out these functions, the adviser will also help enhance the skills of staff in UNDP country offices.

Part of a global network, the policy adviser will draw upon substantive expertise and guidance of practice leaders and senior management at UNDP's New York headquarters and exchange experiences with advisers in other regions. The adviser will also be expected to contribute to and build external ''knowledge networks'', which will accumulate information on consultants, and build a data base of best practices and financing opportunities. Such networks create communities of practice learning throughout the organization in the area of Pro-Poor Policies.

REQUIREMENTS:

-  Knowledge and preferably 15 years of experience in providing policy advice on trade and industrial policy and experience in providing policy advice on export diversification; import rationalisation; use of non-tariff barriers to trade; aspects of intellectual property rights and TRIPS, and issues relating to national private sector competitiveness; sequencing of trade and financial liberalisation policies; privatisation and restructuring HIPC and other debt relief mechanisms; approaches to bridging the digital divide to enable greater equity as well as national competitiveness.

-  Specialised experience in applied macro-economic policies, especially as they relate to fiscal, trade liberalisation and debt management strategies.

-  Experience in the Africa region and the Least Developed Countries in particular.

-  Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly for building networks and partnerships and good working knowledge of information and communications technology. 8) Fellowship for International Women Journalists / International

Women's Media Foundation / USA / Deadline: November 15, 2004.

DESCRIPTION:

The IWMF Fellowship program offers women journalists from around the world the opportunity to receive on-the-job training with top media companies in the United States. The four-month fellowship is available to women journalists living and working outside of the United States. U.S. and international journalists working in the United States are not eligible.

One fellow will be selected for 2005 for a fellowship that will begin in March and end in June.

An advisor selected by the host media company will work with the fellow to create a training plan for the length of the four-month fellowship. The advisor will oversee and work with the fellow throughout the fellowship.

The Fellow will do research, conduct interviews, file stories and perform other work expected of newsroom staff. She is also encouraged to take part in the community where the media company is located by attending community events and speaking with local groups about her home country.

The IWMF will work with both the fellow and the host media company throughout the fellowship. At the end of the fellowship, the fellow will evaluate the fellowship and create a plan to incorporate her new knowledge and skills when she returns home.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duration: One year initially

- Assist in establishing and implementing procedures to facilitate and manage applications for participation presented by victims to the Court;

- Assist victims and groups of victims to present applications for participation in Court proceedings and provide information and guidance during the proceedings;

- Assist in the organisation of legal representation for victims;

- Assist victims legal representatives where necessary and in coordination with other staff members of the Division of Victims and Counsel, organise relevant training for them;

- Prepare and assist in the production of notes, letters, background papers and reports; conduct substantive research and draft papers on complex legal issues related to the participation of victims in proceedings before the Court;

- Assist in organizing and preparing meetings, working sessions and seminars on issues of victims participation in the proceedings;

- Perform ad hoc duties as required.

The incumbent will have frequent contact with victims, groups of victims, bar associations, civil society organizations and lawyers representing victims and their families.

REQUIREMENTS:

-  Advance university degree in law with specialization in international law, human rights and the rights of victims.

-  Two to four years professional experience relevant to the post at the national or international level.

-  The incumbent will require an ability to assist in the planning of work of the Section and to manage conflicting priorities;

-  an ability to draft clearly and well in one of the two working languages;

-  the capacity to apply good legal judgment in the context of assignments given;

-  sound communications and negotiating skills and the ability to maintain good interpersonal relations.

-  The applicant should possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds, and strong teamwork skills.

-  He or she must have full proficiency in the use of computers and the ability to use relevant software applications, in particular information databases.

-  Fluency, both written and oral, in French or English, with a working knowledge of the other is essential. Knowledge of another official language of the Court would be considered an additional asset.

NOTE: Post to be filled preferably by a national of a State Party to the ICC Statute, or of a State which has signed and is engaged in the ratification process or which is engaged in the accession process, but nationals from non-state parties may also be considered.

SUMMARY:

The Abortion Access Project (AAP) seeks a full time office manager to provide operational leadership and to perform tasks needed to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of AAP's office and programs.  This person will work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director and with AAP program staff.

The Abortion Access Project is a group of advocates and health professionals that seeks to increase awareness of and access to abortion as an integrated part of comprehensive reproductive health care.  The Project conducts training, advocacy and public education work on the state and national levels to increase the number of abortion providers, improve the education of health professions students, and ensure access to abortion for all women.

REQUIREMENTS:

* Commitment to ensuring reproductive freedom for all women and to AAP's mission

* Three plus years experience in office administration and financial management

* Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, as part of a small staff

* Strong ability to interact well on the phone, through email, and in person with a wide range of people

* Excellent computer skills essential.  Familiarity with Quickbooks, MS Publisher preferred. Graphics knowledge a plus.

* Good, detail-oriented administrative skills

* Strong time management skills

* Excellent skills in oral and written communications

* Skill and experience in working with other professionals to strengthen program and project management

* Grant writing and development experience a plus.
