improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food
security and alleviating poverty through research and partnerships to achieve
sustainable increases in agricultural productivity and income, while ensuring
the efficient and more equitable use and conservation of natural
resources. With its main research
station and headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and a staff of over 500 scientists
and support personnel, ICARDA works through a network of partnerships with
national agricultural research systems (NARS), regional and international
institutions, universities, advanced research institutes, and non-governmental
organizations. In addition to its headquarters programs, ICARDA operates
throughout the non-tropical dry areas through regional programs and country
offices..
The Position
ICARDA has an immediate vacancy
for a small ruminant nutritionist (RA level) to work as part of an
interdisciplinary team to develop improved livestock production systems in dry
lands. The incumbent will be based at
ICARDAs headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and will report to the Senior Small
Ruminant Scientist under the Diversification and Sustainable Intensification of
Production Systems (DSIPS) Program.
Duties and Responsibilities
The ruminant nutritionist will be
part of the Livestock Production Systems Team (small ruminant management,
forage systems and range ecology) and will collaborate with scientists from all
ICARDA programs (DSIPS, biodiversity, genetic enhancement, land and water
management, socio-economics and policy), and from national R&D centers.
The specific responsibilities are
as follows:
·
Design and conduct nutritional
studies on conventional and unconventional feed resources for small ruminant
meat, milk and fiber production
·
Study nutritional requirements
and develop feeding regimes suitable for the major production systems of the
non-tropical dry areas
·
Contribute to training and
capacity development (e.g. group and individual training for NARS, extension
staff and graduate students, visiting scientists, post-doctoral students,
workshops)
·
Train and advise staff in the
ICARDA sheep unit on nutritional issues
·
Prepare training and extension
material on small ruminant nutrition
·
Prepare and assist in the
preparation of project proposals for funding
·
Perform any other jobs assigned
by the supervisor
Qualifications and Experience
·
PhD in ruminant nutrition, with
at least three years research experience
·
Experience with laboratory
methods for nutrition and feed quality studies
·
Experience in participatory and
community-based R&D would be an advantage
·
Good command of spoken and
written English essential, Arabic would be an advantage
·
Demonstrated ability to summarize
data and write technical and non-technical reports in English
·
Good inter-personal skills,
ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams
·
Excellent command of MS Office
applications, proficiency in the use of statistical packages for data analysis.
The
appointment will be for an initial period of two years, renewable thereafter on
an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars. Benefits include housing allowance, paid home

Living in Syria
ICARDAs
headquarters are situated 30 km south of Aleppo, Syrias second largest city.

some a short drive from Aleppo. There
are four distinct seasons and the terrain varies from desert to mountains to
fertile fruit orchards. Major

using tourism as a strategic tool in wealth creation and local economic
development. SNV Kenya currently covers three region specific destinations
namely: The North Rift, with Lake Baringo National
Park and Lake Bogoria tourism resorts, the South
Rift, with Nairobi National Park, Amboseli National
Park and Maasai Mara National Reserve and North Kenya
with wildlife sanctuaries like Samburu game reserve,

SNV
is looking for a senior Sustainable Pro-poor Tourism Advisor to provide
strategic direction in up-scaling the country tourism Programme.
The Tourism Advisor will be part of the North Kenya Portfolio (NKP), comprising
of advisors from other sectors, with duty station Nanyuki.
The Advisor will deliver advisory services to local clients in NKP and steer
national processes with national actors in the tourism industry. As the country
leader in tourism, he/she will have an active role in coaching and steering
tourism advisors in the other 2 portfolios of SNV/Kenya, in delivering services
within their proscribed destinations.
She/he will report to the Northern Kenya Portfolio Coordinator.
MAIN
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Advisory services
1. Identify and assist relevant
client/client groups to conduct investment studies, identify and profile
investment opportunities in the destination of operation.

regions on pro-poor tourism approaches and facilitate the development of viable bussineses that satisfy the financial, economic ecological and socio-cultural criteria of

3. Provide technical advice to selected

Cameroon intervenes through four teams of advisors. Two teams are based in

Province) and in Maroua, covering the Extreme-North
Province. In each area, multidisciplinary teams of advisors provide Capacity
Development Services to local NGO producers and governmental organisations amongst others.

seeks to influence a positive and lasting improvement of poor peoples
livelihoods through the development of market value chains (namely Timber and
Non Timber Forest Products [NTFP] and pastoral livestock & bi-products) and
access to basic services, namely drinking water and quality primary health

access to quality health services with a special focus on governance and equity
issues. To reach these objectives we work on capacity building of local

MAIN

Implement SNV Cameroon strategy in

the framework of the Millennium Development Goals. In relation the WaSH sector, SNV Kenya aims to contribute to MDG 7

sustainable access to safe water and basic sanitation (incl. hygiene).
SNV
Kenya support to water, sanitation and hygiene is guided by impact targets
emanating from the MDG-based National Water Services Strategy (NWSS) 2007-2015
as domesticated by the Water Services Boards and urban (utility) and rural
(community-based) Water Service Providers who provide a primary entry points
for WaSH services. To ensure increased access to
adequate and sustainable WaSH services, SNV Kenya
seeks to work with WaSH service providers (and support programmes)
in providing access to clean water to rural (pastoralists) communities and the peri-urban poor. Working with and through client
constellations, our efforts are geared towards bridging (inter)sectoral divides by fostering relationships between key
players involved in WaSH service delivery and water
(and other natural) resource management to sustain the water supply and
quality.
MAIN
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Refine and evolve the WASH concepts and
strategies developed to date at the Country and Portfolio level and translate
these into action-oriented initiatives by a multitude of actors within the
sector, thereby giving due attention to power relations that foster inequality
and hamper a conducive environment for service provision to the poor.
2. Maintain up-to-date information on sector
developments through an on-going analysis of trends and issues and identify,
together with all relevant stakeholders the requisite capacity development
services geared towards increasing access to safe and sustainable drinking
water and basic sanitation.
3. Support initiatives of local actors to
influence and contribute to policy and strategy development within the water
sector, facilitating scaling up and rolling out of lessons learnt at the local
and national level
4. Delivery of advisory services to public,
civil society and private sector organizations towards enhanced delivery of
water and sanitation services in Northern Kenya.
5. Investigate and stimulate public-private
and civil society partnerships to ensure quality of water and sanitation
