The Organization

Established in 1977 as an autonomous, non-profit, international research center, ICARDA is one of the 15 international research centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme.  ICARDA’s mission is to contribute to the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food security and alleviating poverty through research and partnerships to achieve sustainable increases in agricultural productivity and income, while ensuring the efficient and more equitable use and conservation of natural resources.  With its main research station and headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and a staff of over 500 scientists and support personnel, ICARDA works through a network of partnerships with national agricultural research systems (NARS), regional and international institutions, universities, advanced research institutes, and non-governmental organizations. In addition to its headquarters programs, ICARDA operates throughout the non-tropical dry areas through regional programs and country offices..

 

The Position

ICARDA has an immediate vacancy for a small ruminant nutritionist (RA level) to work as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop improved livestock production systems in dry lands.  The incumbent will be based at ICARDA’s headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and will report to the Senior Small Ruminant Scientist under the Diversification and Sustainable Intensification of Production Systems (DSIPS) Program.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The ruminant nutritionist will be part of the Livestock Production Systems Team (small ruminant management, forage systems and range ecology) and will collaborate with scientists from all ICARDA programs (DSIPS, biodiversity, genetic enhancement, land and water management, socio-economics and policy), and from national R&D centers.

 

The specific responsibilities are as follows:

·        Design and conduct nutritional studies on conventional and unconventional feed resources for small ruminant meat, milk and fiber production

·        Study nutritional requirements and develop feeding regimes suitable for the major production systems of the non-tropical dry areas

·        Contribute to training and capacity development (e.g. group and individual training for NARS, extension staff and graduate students, visiting scientists, post-doctoral students, workshops)

·        Train and advise staff in the ICARDA sheep unit on nutritional issues

·        Prepare training and extension material on small ruminant nutrition

·        Prepare and assist in the preparation of project proposals for funding

·        Perform any other jobs assigned by the supervisor

 

Qualifications and Experience

·        PhD in ruminant nutrition, with at least three years research experience

·        Experience with laboratory methods for nutrition and feed quality studies

·        Experience in participatory and community-based R&D would be an advantage

·        Good command of spoken and written English essential, Arabic would be an advantage

·        Demonstrated ability to summarize data and write technical and non-technical reports in English

·        Good inter-personal skills, ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams

·        Excellent command of MS Office applications, proficiency in the use of statistical packages for data analysis.

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, renewable thereafter on an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars.  Benefits include housing allowance, paid home leave travel, a savings scheme, life and health insurance package, vehicle for business and personal use, and free enrollment for dependent children in the ICARDA-administered International School (KG-Grade 12).

Living in Syria

ICARDA’s headquarters are situated 30 km south of Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city. In addition to the internationally-accredited School, ICARDA runs a Sports and Social Club for the staff. Syria has many historical and archaeological sites, some a short drive from Aleppo.  There are four distinct seasons and the terrain varies from desert to mountains to fertile fruit orchards.  Major international airlines fly into Damascus and Aleppo.

The person will be ICDI\'s main \'anchor\' for a new programme activity: the International Palestinian Children Initiative (IPCI.) The focus of this programme is to create holistic, high-impact interventions that will support the healthy development of Palestinian girls and boys. IPCI is a joint programme of ICDI and its Palestinian partner organization The Trust of Programs for Early Childhood, Family and Community Education.

The new Programme Manager will be expected to have set up IPCI as a sustainable, long term programme after one year. It is, therefore, an absolute requirement that he/she has a solid knowledge of the region and funding agencies, and has access to high-quality networks both in the Middle East and other parts of the world. We hope that, given additional funding, the post can be changed into a full-time position.

The Senior Programme Manager\'s key responsibilities are to design, draft and develop new proposals and projects; monitor and evaluate projects; draft reports; provide technical assistance and training during project implementation; contribute to organizational strategic planning and development; identify and pursue funding opportunities; contribute to action research; network and represent ICDI and the IPCI programme; and support and advise junior programme managers.

ICDI is an international development not-for-profit organization. ICDI promotes the well-being of children growing up in difficult circumstances. We aim at achieving considerable impact in both ‘impact areas’. We do this through providing advisory services, facilitating knowledge development, brokering and networking, strengthening local capacity builders, supporting the establishment of local capacity development funds and carrying out advocacy at national and international levels.

SNV Kenya focuses most of its capacity building support to the Arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya. SNV currently operates in three portfolio offices namely: South Rift, located in Nairobi but serving the districts of Kajiado, Narok and Transmara; North Rift located in Eldoret, serving the Districts of Keiyo,  Marakwet, Pokot, Koibatek, Nandi, Baringo, Turkana, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Mount Elgon and Transmara and North Kenya located in Nanyuki, serving the districts of Samburu, Laikipia, Isiolo, Marsabit and Moyale.

With a population of 32 million people, 75% living in rural areas, the achievement of the Government of Kenya’s long term development goals will require an acceleration of growth, and a greater emphasis on growth in the rural areas. The government of Kenya has identified tourism as one such vessel of economic development for poverty reduction because of its unique characteristics such as the focus on rural areas, the potential for local participation in the value chain, the multiplier effect potential, among many others.

SNV Kenya seeks to complement the government and other industry stakeholders in using tourism as a strategic tool in wealth creation and local economic development. SNV Kenya currently covers three region specific destinations namely: The North Rift, with Lake Baringo National Park and Lake Bogoria tourism resorts, the South Rift, with Nairobi National Park, Amboseli National Park and Maasai Mara National Reserve and North Kenya with wildlife sanctuaries like Samburu game reserve, Shaba game Reserve, buffalo springs game reserve; Bisan Adhi game Reserve and a number of private and community owned conservancies which are frequently visited by tourists. SNV aims overall to contribute towards destination management efforts currently on-going and particularly informed by the need to mainstream the pro-poor dimension.

SNV is looking for a senior Sustainable Pro-poor Tourism Advisor to provide strategic direction in up-scaling the country tourism Programme. The Tourism Advisor will be part of the North Kenya Portfolio (NKP), comprising of advisors from other sectors, with duty station Nanyuki. The Advisor will deliver advisory services to local clients in NKP and steer national processes with national actors in the tourism industry. As the country leader in tourism, he/she will have an active role in coaching and steering tourism advisors in the other 2 portfolios of SNV/Kenya, in delivering services within their proscribed destinations.  She/he will report to the Northern Kenya Portfolio Coordinator.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

A.      Advisory services

1.       Identify and assist relevant client/client groups to conduct investment studies, identify and profile investment opportunities in the destination of operation.

2.       Advise tourism ventures in the target regions on pro-poor tourism approaches and facilitate  the development of viable bussineses that satisfy the financial, economic  ecological and socio-cultural criteria of healthy bussinesses.

3.       Provide technical advice to selected viable tourism bussinesses, (facilitate the development of strategies, business plans, quality products and services and facilitate the link with financial institutions and the market).

4.       Facilitate multi-stake holder platforms in selected destinations with a view to enhance over-all performance of the destination.

5.       Work with local capacity builders to support vocational skill development on various tourism services to increase employment.

6.       Provide technical assistance on destination governance.

B.      Learning / teamwork:

1.       Coach other advisors of the tourism team.

2.       Lead tourism sector in the identification of best practices, share and promote learning of them; identify the needs for training and/ or alliances; promote the participation of SNV in thematic national and international networks related to thematic expertise.

3.       Actively participate in national/international learning and experiences sharing networks, and feed the knowledge back into the team.

4.       Pro-actively develop the tools and review achieved results within the context of the strategic objectives and lead collective learning of clients, sector teams and expertise group from the lessons learnt.

C.      Knowledge development

1.       Lead the tourism sector in the identification of best practises, document interesting results and lessons, promote SNV participation in thematic national and international networks and contribute to internal and external knowledge development Knowledge competencies and skills

2.       Identification of new knowledge sources for clients and team members

3.       Contribute to the documentation and knowledge development in the Tourism sector in Kenya and ESA Cluster.

D.      Positioning

1.       Steer the tourism team in reviewing and transitioning SNV tourism strategy inline with destination management strategy.

2.       Proactively link pro-poor tourism initiatives with mainstream tourism industry.

3.       Proactively develop, expand and maintain effective and efficient Pro-poor tourism related networks with key stakeholders and partners for the purposes of leveraging for better impact in the sector.

4.       Play an active role in partnership building and resource mobilization activities of SNV.

5.       Assist client organizations in setting up networks and where possible collaborative partnerships with similar and complementary initiatives with actors in the tourism industry with special attention to linkages between the tourism value chain players for effective local benefits.

DESIRED APPOINTMENT DATE: ASAP

SALARY SCALE: 11 minimum € 2795,02 – maximum € 4294,82 gross per month (hypo tax will be deducted) depending on relevant working experience, excluding attractive secondary conditions and individual allowances.

Job qualifications : KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

•        Masters degree in tourism or related field like economics or business management with sufficient experiences in planning, development and marketing of tourism businesses and ventures. 

•        Proven knowledge in theories and practices of destination management , supply chain management, tourism value chain development, pro-poor tourism approaches

•        Proven knowledge and experiences in organisational development, multi- actor facilitation and learning processes, networking and building alliances, good governance and social inclusion

Senior Advisor Pastoral Livestock +b

Job description : SNV develops the capacity of partner organisations through advisory services and knowledge development. In all our work, special attention is given to issues of governance, gender and inclusion.   

SNV Cameroon intervenes through four teams of advisors. Two teams are based in Yaoundι (a National Portfolio and a Forestry focused Portfolio covering a vast forest zone in the East, Centre and South Provinces of Cameroun) while the other two are in Bamenda (covering the North-West Province) and in Maroua, covering the Extreme-North Province. In each area, multidisciplinary teams of advisors provide Capacity Development Services to local NGO producers and governmental organisations amongst others.   

SNV seeks to influence a positive and lasting improvement of poor people’s livelihoods through the development of market value chains (namely Timber and Non Timber Forest Products [NTFP] and pastoral livestock & bi-products) and access to basic services, namely drinking water and quality primary health care. In the latter sector, our aim is to help achieve significant increase of access to quality health services with a special focus on governance and equity issues. To reach these objectives we work on capacity building of local organizations, governance issues and we seek to bridge the micro-macro divide. In these efforts we work with various civil society organizations, mutual health organisations and local government & municipality structures.

SNV Cameroon is looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of Senior Advisor in Pastoral Livestock. The successful candidate will play a significant national advisory role as Pastoralism Thematic Leader (30% of the time) as well as provide technical advice and support to local actors, local communities and tribes for; improved interaction of service users and providers, more efficient planning and services governance for overall improved quality equity and social inclusion of local communities in the Province.    

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•        Provides thematic leadership to pastoral livestock issues of the Cameroon country programme

•        Supports team and partners’ knowledge of  pastoral livestock and their various levels of implementation and progress

•        Reinforces local actors’ capacities so as to enable and monitor progress towards the MDG pastoral goals

•        Supports organisations and local actors to get a better understanding of micro and macro economic issues affecting populations in the Extreme North Province

•        Helps develop and reinforce effective and result orientated partnerships and sharing of knowledge between relevant actors

•        Develops / reinforces pastoral service providers’ capacities to develop and engage in a regular and constructive dialogue with pastoral livestock users with a view of making services more relevant to the latter

•        Reinforces capacities of public services and partners for more equity in access to pastoral livestock and to measure progress towards such equity

Medical facilities: Good medical services in hospitals, private clinics and pharmacies.

SNV Cameroon is looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of Senior Advisor in International Livelihoods and Value Chain Development. Experience with various environments and experience/interest in inclusive business is an asset. The successful candidate will play a significant national advisory role and provide support to the other teams in key cross cutting approaches and issues and advisory services to national clients.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•        Implement SNV Cameroon strategy in contributing to sub-sectors (Pastoralism, NTFP, Timber & second Transformation) and value chain analysis

•        Evolve the value chains selected and translate them into continued support activities to a wide range of actors within the value chains with the aim of creating income and employment opportunities

•        Develop the concept of Inclusive Business to link small stakeholders to national or international market through major enterprises

•        Ensure updated information about trends, market developments and market requirements (regulations, quality standards, trade conditions) in sub-sectors

•        Identify key stakeholders, actors and Local Capacity Builders (LCB) in the value chains and support initiatives to establish market linkages, networks and partnerships between them

•        Identify leverage points and design intervention strategies for value chains development including the enabling environment. Support the actors/stakeholders in the selected value chains through participatory processes and by providing advisory services

•        Establish networks and where possible collaborative partnerships with similar and complementary initiatives, undertaken by other organizations, institutions or programs

•        Take the lead within the SNV team to further develop and fine-tune the value chain development concept, give strategic direction to the scaling up of the program activities, give technical backstopping and guidance to the SNV CMR teams, provide on-the-job support and coaching of advisors and LCB on the above mentioned issues.

Job description : SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is working in over 33 developing countries across the world. The emphasis of our work is on poverty alleviation through (1) increasing Production, Income and Employment (PIE) and (2) increasing access to Basic Services (BASE) in the sectors of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WaSH), Education, Health and Renewable Energy. We do this through providing advisory services, facilitating knowledge development, brokering and networking, strengthening local capacity builders, supporting the establishment of local capacity development funds and carrying out advocacy at national and international levels.

Within its general objective to contribute to poverty reduction, SNV is in the process of focusing its activities on the improvement of basic service delivery within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals. In relation the WaSH sector, SNV Kenya aims to contribute to MDG 7 (Environmental Sustainability), target 10: halving the number of people without sustainable access to safe water and basic sanitation (incl. hygiene).

SNV Kenya support to water, sanitation and hygiene is guided by impact targets emanating from the MDG-based National Water Services Strategy (NWSS) 2007-2015 as domesticated by the Water Services Boards and urban (utility) and rural (community-based) Water Service Providers who provide a primary entry points for WaSH services. To ensure increased access to adequate and sustainable WaSH services, SNV Kenya seeks to work with WaSH service providers  (and support programmes) in providing access to clean water to rural (pastoralists) communities and the peri-urban poor. Working with and through client constellations, our efforts are geared towards bridging (inter)sectoral divides by fostering relationships between key players involved in WaSH service delivery and water (and other natural) resource management to sustain the water supply and quality.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Refine and evolve the WASH concepts and strategies developed to date at the Country and Portfolio level and translate these into action-oriented initiatives by a multitude of actors within the sector, thereby giving due attention to power relations that foster inequality and hamper a conducive environment for service provision to the poor.

2.       Maintain up-to-date information on sector developments through an on-going analysis of trends and issues and identify, together with all relevant stakeholders the requisite capacity development services geared towards increasing access to safe and sustainable drinking water and basic sanitation.

3.       Support initiatives of local actors to influence and contribute to policy and strategy development within the water sector, facilitating scaling up and rolling out of lessons learnt at the local and national level

4.       Delivery of advisory services to public, civil society and private sector organizations towards enhanced delivery of water and sanitation services in Northern Kenya.

5.       Investigate and stimulate public-private and civil society partnerships to ensure quality of water and sanitation services and enhance pro-poor service delivery.

6.       Follow up and contribute actively to national policies and developments related to water and sanitation and analyze them in terms of their opportunities and implications for improved service delivery

7.       To support other SNV advisors in the development of competencies and skills in order to provide the above mentioned services to clients and partners in an effective and efficient manner.

8.       Fulfill a leading role in WaSH knowledge development, brokering and networking (dissemination) within SNV Kenya

•        Advisory Services: leading assignments and being direct responsible for their successful implementation; acting as account manager for specific assignments and / or clients; determining whether or not and when other disciplines should be involved; managing and monitoring progress and resources allocation and deployment; being responsible for contracting process, monitoring quality of services delivered by involved organizations and local capacity builders within assignments; identifying potential conflicting interests and initiating appropriate actions; ensuring clients satisfaction on quality of services and processes during the assignment.

•        Review and Evaluation of Advisory Services: contributing to feedback process, coaching and evaluation of achieved results for clients and SNV; leading the collective learning; being responsible for timely and high quality evaluation processes, coordinating the evaluation process and monitoring with clients; proposing corrective measures and lessons learned based on evaluations; ensures identification of follow up assignments, ensuring planning and coordination of actions.

Job qualifications : ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

•        Academic level of Masters Degree in economics, business administration, environmental science, agro-economy or equivalent.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE FOR THE POSITION:

•        Proved experience in project design and in promoting biofuel projects. Knowledge of value chain approach for economic development in biofuels

•        Knowledge and/or expertise in CDM related to biofuels, CER’s market and VER markets; and using market-based approaches for an expanding biofuels sector.

•        Experience in resource mobilization techniques within the sector.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

•        Professional Background: Minimum 8 years professional work experience, including at least 5 years of international experience as consultant / advisory position, private or development organization. Knowledge of the international development or international business field preferred;
