is a long-term opportunity for a Management Training Specialist to serve as an
integral part of a large, economic governance program in Afghanistan.
Responsibilities:
• Responsible for coordinating, designing
and delivering all management training programs.
• Attend meetings and coordinate with the
Afghan Ministry officials and program staff to assess training needs and
capacity development programs and focus on training, coaching and mentoring
Afghan civil servants on project design & management, project life cycle and
issues related to budget execution and project delivery.
• Provide technical assistance in the
following areas: enhancing international best practices in Project Management,
developing work plans & work breakdown structure for projects, schedules,
establish project control systems, strengthen the organizational and
operational systems.
• Prepare for and conduct training
courses/workshops for selected Afghan government officials.
• Perform any other task, which may be
assigned for the fulfillment of the department objectives.

Organization

in 1977 as an autonomous, non-profit, international research center, ICARDA is
one of the 15 international research centers supported by the Consultative
Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which is co-sponsored by
the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,
the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United
Nations Development Programme. ICARDA’s mission is to contribute to the
improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food
security and alleviating poverty through research and partnerships to achieve
sustainable increases in agricultural productivity and income, while ensuring
the efficient and more equitable use and conservation of natural
resources. With its main research
station and headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and a staff of over 500 scientists
and support personnel, ICARDA works through a network of partnerships with
national agricultural research systems (NARS), regional and international
institutions, universities, advanced research institutes, and non-governmental
organizations. In addition to its headquarters programs, ICARDA operates
throughout the non-tropical dry areas through regional programs and country
offices.
The
Position
The position is designed for an experienced and
self-motivated person with a background in science writing/editing. The
incumbent will report to the Head of Communication, Documentation and
Information Services at ICARDA headquarters and will have the following
responsibilities:

Write/edit a
range of publications including technical reports, journal articles,
general-audience articles, posters, and brochures
·
Work with design,
prepress and printing staff to coordinate production of publications, posters
and other public awareness material
·
Write press
releases, media backgrounders and magazine articles
·
Write/edit
material for the ICARDA website
The position
requires familiarity with prepress
technology. The successful candidate will be expected to work under pressure to
meet tight deadlines.
Qualifications
and Experience

Excellent written
and spoken English
·
Bachelor’s degree
in agriculture or a related discipline (Master’s preferred); or in journalism,
mass communications or equivalent
·
At least five
years experience in science writing and editing
·
Excellent
inter-personal skills, and ability to work as a team member with colleagues of
different nationalities/cultural backgrounds
·
Experience in
media liaison (arranging press and TV coverage, organizing press conferences)
would be a major advantage
Terms
of Appointment
The
appointment will be for an initial period of one year, renewable thereafter on
an annual basis. The salary is paid in
US dollars. Benefits include housing

Living
in Syria
Aleppo
is Syria’s second largest city. Syria
has many historical and archaeological sites, some a short drive from
Aleppo. There are four distinct seasons
and the terrain varies from desert to mountains to fertile fruit orchards.
Major international airlines fly into and out of Damascus and Aleppo. In
addition to the internationally-accredited School, ICARDA runs a Sports and Social
Club for the staff.

been working in Mali since 1979. The emphasis of her work is on poverty
alleviation through (i) improved income and
employment generation and (ii) improved access to basic services. In this
respect, support to local organisations is provided in the form of advisory
services, knowledge brokering and advocacy in six sectors: health, education,
household hygiene, cotton, oil seeds and livestock/pastoralism.
SNV Mali is organized in five teams of advisors based
in the region of Koulikoro and Gao, the District of Bamako and at national level.
The advisor will be part of the Gao
team (8 advisors) in the north of Mali, which is working in the sectors of
health, household hygiene and livestock/pastoralism.
In the light of the implementation of the 2008-2009 strategic plan, the portfolio of Gao is
positioning itself within the pastoralist sector, aiming to create better
marketing conditions for pastoralists and to improve access and sustainable
management of production factors (like water and grazing areas). In this
respect, the clients of Gao
portfolio consist mainly of peasant federations and counsels and their
associations. Linkage to the national level is guaranteed by SNV national team,
while regional networks are facilitating in collaboration with other SNV
countries (Niger, Burkina Faso).
In order to strengthen the guidance, coordination and
strategic direction of the livestock/pastoralist sector, we are looking for an
experienced advisor with a background in Organization and Institutional
Development within a pastoralist context.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

DESCRIPTION OF DUTY STATION:
Gao is a very interesting place at the edge of the
desert. It has 60.000 inhabitants but
not so much ˇ§luxuryˇ¨. The climate is
hard (hot, dusty and dry). People are very friendly. Youˇ¦ll
need excellent adaptation skills. If you
have these, living and working in Gao
will be one of the most precious experiences in your life.
Medical services: Only basic, for good, specialized
health care you will have to go to Bamako or Niamey.
Educational services: Only local schools,
international school in Bamako.
Security: Mali in general is very safe. Gao city is a secure place to
live. When travelling in certain, remote, parts of the region of Gao we use some security
measures.
Accessibility: Gao
is located some 1200 km (12 hours by car) from Bamako, Mali’s capital city and
450 km (6 hours by car) to Niamey, the capital city of Niger. From Bamako and Niamey there are good, daily
flights to Europe; telephone and internet connections in Gao are good (VSAT installation).
SALARY SCALE: 10 minimum Łá 2349,63
ˇV maximum Łá 3776,60 gross per month (hypo tax will be deducted) depending on
relevant experience, excluding attractive secondary conditions and individual
